Freed from his duties as director of the Conservatoire in 1920, Gabriel Fauré, in the twilight of his life, produced several works with a testamentary tone, including this carefree and luminous Second Sonata for Cello and Piano. While sketching it out in March 1921, Fauré was thinking of Saint-Saëns’s Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1, “a masterpiece that has been heard far too rarely, and that because cellists claim that the cello part is less brilliant than the piano part! As if in an ensemble work, the overall effect did not arise from the combination of the different instruments!” he wrote to Paulette Mayer.

Delayed by illness, the completion of the manuscript owed much to his friend Marguerite Hasselmans, who seems to have transcribed the score at his dictation. The work is dedicated to violinist Charles-Martin Loeffler (1861–1935), who at the time was the patron of the retired composer. It was premiered at the Société nationale de musique on May 13, 1922, by Gérard Hekking and Alfred Cortot, who had already introduced the First Sonata, Opus 109, in 1918.

At a time when the Parisian music scene was discovering polytonality, Fauré remained true to himself and comforted those nostalgic for the Belle Époque, such as Vincent d’Indy: “I want to tell you how deeply I am still under the spell of your most beautiful Cello Sonata. In it I found: Music—the kind that seems to be forgotten nowadays in favor of unpleasant sound clusters. Your Andante is a masterpiece of expressive sensitivity, and I infinitely love the finale, so lively and so captivating” (May 14, 1922). https://www.bruzanemediabase.com/node/14782
