Zhang Zhou turn into a butterfly refers to a Taoist allegory called The Butterfly Dream from 3rd century B.C. In it, Zhang Zhou dreams he is a butterfly. When he awakens, he wonders if he is a human who dreamed of a butterfly or a butterfly that has begun dreaming it is human.

LianZhu refers to the tragic love story of the Butterfly Lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, set in the Eastern Jin dynasty (265-420 AD). In the story, the lady Zhu disguised as a man studies along with the man Liang and they eventually fall in love with each other. However, they are separated due to family arrangements and eventually Liang passes away. On the way to her wedding, a wind takes Zhu to Liang's tomb. Devasted that they cannot be together, she commits suicide by throwing herself in the tomb. From the tomb, two butterflies arise and fly away, implying that the two have reincarnated as butterflies.
