Those who did invest the time and money in unearthing it were amply rewarded: The set is a perfect complement to Fitzgerald's classic series of Song Book albums. Unlike the Song Books, however, Ella Sings Broadway concentrates not on the time-honored history of The Great White Way and its stellar songwriters, but on songs and shows by writers that were part of Broadway's recent past: Rodgers and Hammerstein (South Pacific, Me and Juliet) Adler and Ross (Damn Yankees, The Pajama Game), Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls), and Lerner and Loewe (Brigadoon, My Fair Lady).

This overlooked gem of an album was arranged and conducted by Marty Paich, the man responsible for such other Fitzgerald triumphs as Ella Swings Brightly and Whisper Not -- which places Ella Sings Broadway in most excellent company.
