Description
"Days Between" stands out as one of the Grateful Dead's most epic songs from their later years. Composed during a collaborative session, Jerry Garcia crafted the music while Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics, making it one of their final significant joint efforts. Its ambition and grandeur place it alongside classics like “Dark Star” and “Terrapin Station.”
Performed 40 times between 2/22/93 and 6/24/95, the song is deeply emotional and well-written, yet none of the live renditions truly captured its full potential.
To address this, I decided to use technology to create a more polished version. By employing stem separation, I combined elements from multiple performances to produce this mix.
I believe "Days Between" deserves a standout version, and it’s a real disappointment that one hasn’t emerged—until now.
The primary version I used is from 10/18/94. I incorporated Bruce Hornsby’s piano playing from 6/24/95 and refined Jerry's vocals using takes from both the 6/24/95 show and the 2/19/93 rehearsal (from the So Many Roads box set). Additionally, I included drums and guitar from 12/11/94.
Although I have some background in recording and editing, I’m not a professional engineer, so this project was a learning experience for me. I could keep tweaking and improving it, but I’ve already invested more time than I initially planned.
So, here it is—my version of "Days Between."
