Description
"THE IRISH VOLUNTEER-Songs of the Irish Union Soldier, 1861-1865 is one of the most emotionally credible Civil War recordings ever made, as well as a superb, irresistibly melodic Irish folk recording (Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe)" is what criticts are saying about this collection of twelve songs from the American Civil War, centering on the Union army's famed "Irish Brigade," recruited and commanded by Brigadier General Thomas F. Meagher. The album is the product of years of research, including Civil War reenacting, and seven months of arranging and recording. Great care was taken to give the album an authentic, 19th century feel and sound, from the use of only period style instruments and vocal harmonies, to the enlisting of some of the finest musicians in Irish traditional music.
The principle musicians include the young genius Liz Knowles on fiddle (Riverdance, The John Whelan Band), brilliant uilleann piper and Shanachie recording artist Jerry O'Sullivan, and the great John Whelan (seven time All-Ireland champion and Narada recording artist) on Irish button accordion. The recording was produced, engineered, and arranged by David Kincaid, a veteran recording artist himself, having made seven albums with roots-rockers The Brandos, who also sings the lead and harmony vocals, and plays the guitar, banjo, mandolin and bodhrán. The album is not just great music, but a complete historical package, including a 35 page booklet with complete lyrics,- Civil War period graphics (many previously unpublished), and a brief history and liner notes by noted historian Joseph G. Bilby, author of several books on the Civil War, including the definitve history of the Irish Brigade: "Remember Fontenoy! The 69th New York And The Irish Brigade In The Civil War." (Longstreet House, ISBN No. 0-944413-37-4).
