Clifton Chenier, born June 25, 1925 in Opelousas, Louisiana, died December 12, 1987 in Lafayette, Louisiana, USA. Speaking French from Louisiana, he was a prominent performer and artist of Zydeco, a blend of Cajun and Creole music, with R&B, Jazz, and Blues influences. Singer, songwriter and musician, he played the accordion, and the Washboard / Frottoir. He won a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording in 1983 for "I'm Here" and "Bogalusa Boogie" and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in Louisiana 2011. He was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1989. Father of CJ Chénier and Brother of Cleveland Chénier. In 1984 he was honored with the title of National Heritage Fellow. In 2014, he received a Grammy for the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was known as The "King of Zydeco". A flamboyant personality, known for his gold teeth and the cape and crown he wore to concerts. Chenier set the standard for all zydeco performers who have followed in his footsteps. He found his early influences in the blues of Muddy Waters, Peetie Wheatstraw and Lightnin 'Hopkins, and the New Orleans R&B of the 1920s and' 30s, of Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, as well as the recordings of the zydeco accordionist Amédée Ardoin, and what his childhood friends Claude Faulk and Jesse and Zozo Reynolds played. In 1984 he recorded an album for J.J. Caillier (Country Boy Now Grammy Award Winner 1984!) Caillier CR-5401, including, among others, a cover of What’d I Say by Ray Charles.
