It's summer, and therefore time for the annual Classic Open Air in Nuremberg! The festival is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. We're attending the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra's concert on August 9th. The concert's motto is "Nuremberg greets the wide world." With 80,000 visitors, it's the most popular concert of this year's festival. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra performs under the direction of its chief conductor, Jonathan Darlington. Admission is free, but you can show your support by purchasing a bird pin and paying whatever you can or want.

The concerts take place on the large meadow in the Luitpoldhain and always have a wonderful atmosphere. The grounds fill up by the afternoon, and chairs and tables are set up, as a pre-concert picnic is a must. And when the concert begins as dusk falls, a magical atmosphere emerges. A highlight is the sea of sparkling sparklers to the English folk song "Londonderry Air."

In keeping with the theme, the concert begins with the overture to Wagner's opera "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg." The focus of the first part is the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23, with its famous opening. The virtuoso pianist is the Italian Frederico Colli.

After the interval, the program continues with Bernstein, the Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss Jr., and several pieces by English composers. Pianist Frederico Colli makes his second appearance in Richard Addiscombe's "Warsaw Concerto" for piano and orchestra, actually a film score.

The enthusiastic audience applauded for four encores. We, too, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. And the weather was perfect: a balmy summer evening.
