French musician Jacques Loussier began experimenting with sheet music out of his deep love for Bach and the piano. His series Play Bach, which fused Bach’s works with jazz, became a worldwide sensation, selling millions of copies. He later went on to arrange works by other composers such as Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel, and Claude Debussy, and composed numerous soundtracks for films and television dramas.

Loussier’s career, in fact, began with a small twist of fate. At the age of 16, he entered the Paris Conservatory. During a student competition, while performing one of Bach’s preludes, he suddenly forgot part of the score. Yet he didn’t stop playing—instead, he smoothly shifted into improvisation. This was, in fact, a method used by many great masters he admired. As Loussier recalled:
“I really love Bach. To me, he is the greatest composer of all time. Many people forget that 18th-century musicians improvised a great deal—Bach included.”

As a composer, Loussier was equally prolific. He wrote music for over 100 films and TV productions, as well as a symphonic mass, a trumpet concerto, a violin concerto, and ballet music. He was never concerned about the fact that he was less known as a composer than as a performer:
“I just try to express what I feel as best as I can. If it works—bravo. If it doesn’t—bravo anyway.”

When he passed away in 2019 at the age of 84, he left behind a legacy that captivated not only classical music lovers but also those hearing him for the first time—the master of “well-tempered swing.”
