The first single from Chic's self-titled 1977 debut album, and the group's maiden hit, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" was a magnificent introduction to the band. Effusive and driven by both disco and funk riffs, the song not only brought people to the dancefloors, it was a delicious taste of the cheekily constructed, subtle double meanings that the band would use in so many ways throughout their career.
With an outstanding guitar effort from Nile Rodgers at the fore, the overall sonics of "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" not only capitalized on the disco craze sweeping the United States, but also conjured strong images of Depression-era marathon dance parties to those in the know. With the incorporation of that now classic spoken "Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah" lifted from the dance scenes in 1969's They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Chic not only delivered a great catch phrase, they also dissolved generational barriers, brilliantly and quietly pointing out that dancing is dancing -- no matter the time or place. It just doesn't get much better than that.
