Track 01: CHANCES
***
Chances is the first song on the Good Intentions EP. For some reason, the very first tracks I write for a new project almost always end up being the opening songs. And everything else tends to grow naturally from there. As soon as I finished Chances, I knew we were going to explore something black and white, hypnotic, slightly aggressive, and maybe a little hazy.
I think Chances is about an unhealthy dynamic between two people — when you know the relationship is full of red flags, but you still can’t let it go. You keep thinking maybe it could work, maybe you’ll figure it out, even though deep down you know that’s not true. And so you wait — for either a complete disaster or some kind of miracle that never comes.
Isn’t it strange how we often know exactly what we need to do to fix a problem, yet we consciously choose not to? In this song, the main character keeps their partner on a leash (figuratively, of course), knowing that if they loosen their grip, the love will slip away. But love doesn’t really exist anymore when one person has to hold on that tightly to something already broken.
And I know that sometimes despair takes over. You don’t want to believe the feelings aren’t mutual anymore. So you pretend. You avoid. Because facing the truth feels unbearable. And you keep giving chances to something that never changes — just like the main character in this song.

At first, the arrangement was much simpler. But I wanted to show how anger and frustration build — not just through lyrics, but through the music itself. That shift from hip-hop/trap drums to live drums gave me exactly what I was looking for: a sense of the emotion escalating to a different level. The tempo doesn’t actually change, but it feels like the song gets faster and a bit more aggressive. Then it bursts into a full alternative rock chorus (a classic move for me at this point).
I did think about adding a big guitar solo at the end for a dramatic climax, but then I thought: No, let’s do something different. Instead of pushing the energy further, I went in the opposite direction. Because I wanted to capture that feeling of suppressed emotion — when you’re barely holding it together and ready to explode… but instead, you just exhale.
