Excerpted from Pink Martini's virtual 2020 New Year's Eve concert, filmed at Pink Martini World Headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and broadcast on December 31, 2020. "But Now I'm Back" is a popular original song for Pink Martini, first heard, sung by special guest singer, host of NPR's All Things Considered, Ari Shapiro, on the band's fourth studio album, Splendor in the Grass. It is a concert staple for Pink Martini whenever Ari Shapiro can join the band in concert to sing it live. Co-written by Thomas Lauderdale and Splendor in the Grass producer Alex Marashian as a counterpart and companion piece to the band's original song "And Then You're Gone," the music was inspired by the same first movement of Franz Schubert's lovely Fantasie in F minor for Four Hands D940, but this time telling the tale from the perspective of the Lothario Lorenzo, who has jilted his lover Maria and been kicked out of the house in "And Then You're Gone." This video was shot during the COVID era and Ari Shapiro was patched into the concert from the road. The performance also features bandleader Thomas Lauderdale on piano, Gavin Bondy on trumpet and Robert Taylor on trombone, as well as a chorus made up of friends of the band, spliced in to the live recording.
