You see, Billy Joel wrote this song for his young daughter at the time, Alexa Ray Joel, his daughter by his now former wife, Christie Brinkley. Joel, at the time of writing this song knew that his marriage to 'Uptown Girl' Christie Brinkley was headed for divorce.

With this song, Joel wanted his young daughter Alexa to know that even though he may soon not be physically around her as much as he used to be, that 'Wherever you [Alexa/Ms] may go, No matter where you [Alexa/Ms] are, I [Billy Joel/Dad/Me] never will be far away.'

In 2004, Billy Joel stated that 'Reassuring children that they are not alone or could be abandoned is very important for their well-being.'

So, Ms, this song reminds me of you & me, & although I am not currently close to you physically, my mind, my thoughts & my heart are always close by...[same of course for JD&A--but it's different with a daughter/my little girl].
