I wrote this in the winter when the lake had frozen over. Everything was fairly still beneath the ice, but the pondweed ebbed slightly - it was quite hypnotic. "Crystal veil" comes from a poem by Emily Dickinson in which she evokes winter without using the bog-standard words "snow", "ice", "cold", etc. She's an absolute hero as, had I not come across that poem, this might have been entitled "Beneath the snow/ice/cold".
