Description
"Beeswing" surely is - together with "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" - Richard's best-loved acoustic ballad. The touching love story from the 60s set to a melancholy tune in the traditional folk style is "exactly the type of song Richard Thompson fans love to get their teeth into" (Patrick Humphries). There are quite a few versions on the "Tube", but this one (probably a demo) was chosen by Thompson himself for the wonderful "RT" box set - so he must consider it a good 'un (and he is well-known for being his own hardest critic!).
This goes out to the love of my life up in heaven, for
"she was a rare thing,
fine as a beeswing,
and I miss her more than ever words could say.
If I could just taste
all of her wildness now,
if I could hold her in my arms today
then I wouldn't want her any other way."
It's so very hard to cope here alone without you, Verena . . . !
