I hear this repeatedly over and over as the common theme with any guitarist/musician that has broken that dreaded beginners barrier or reached high levels of achievement with their instrument. Have you been obsessed or just a dabbler expecting grand results?

In this month’s episode of The Spanish Guitar Mastermind, Flamenco guitarist @donsoledadmusic explains how he broke through the beginner’s phase with a healthy dose of obsession.

We need that obsession and drive, especially at the beginning, to break through the challenges of learning a new skill, like playing guitar. Passion alone won’t cut it.

Not only in music, but for myself, my biggest growth spurts in in anything from my fitness, health, business, etc… have been when I get obsessed for a period of time.

Yes, there can be unhealthy levels of obsession, but in most cases, that’s not the case. Keep in mind, non-artists or average people may think your “obsession” is overboard or too much, but that’s exactly why they’re average or haven’t achieved that particular skill/goal you may be determined to achieve.
