The "Pontifical Anthem and March" (Italian: Inno e Marcia Pontificale, Latin: Hymnus et modus militaris Pontificalis), also known as the "Papal Anthem", is the anthem played to mark the presence of the Pope or one of his representatives, such as a nuncio, and on other solemn occasions. When the Vatican's flag is ceremonially raised, only the first eight bars are played.

While the Papal Anthem also serves as the national anthem of the Holy See and the Vatican City State, the Vatican stresses that it "is not to be understood as a national anthem"; it is a composition whose words and music "speak to the heart of many throughout the world who see in Rome the See of Peter."


FRANÇAIS : Inno e Marcia Pontificale (Hymne et Marche Pontificale) est l'hymne national et pontifical (on trouve aussi hymne papal) du Vatican.

Il s'agit du seul hymne national du monde à être chanté dans une langue ancienne, le latin (langue officielle de la Sainte Église catholique).

Composée par Charles Gounod (1818-1893) pour le jubilé sacerdotal du pape Pie IX, la Marche pontificale[note 2] fut exécutée pour la première fois le 11 avril 1869, sur le parvis de la basilique Saint-Pierre, par 7 fanfares militaires, en présence du souverain pontife.

À l'occasion de l'année sainte 1950, le pape Pie XII décida que cette marche deviendrait l'hymne officiel de l'État de la Cité du Vatican (le Saint-Siège), en remplacement de la Gran Marcia Trionfale. Sa première exécution comme hymne pontifical eut lieu le 24 décembre 1949.


ITALIANO: L'Inno pontificio è l'inno nazionale dello Stato della Città del Vaticano.

La musica venne composta da Charles Gounod (1818-1893); ad essa si accompagnano tre testi (due in latino e uno in italiano), scritti posteriormente da tre differenti autori.

Stilisticamente si tratta di una pomposa marcia alla francese, tipica del repertorio del proprio compositore: l'inno si divide in due parti (la prima in fa maggiore, solenne e maestosa, seguita dalla seconda, il cui stile è affine a quello dei canti liturgici), cui fa seguito una terza parte (la Marcia pontificia) dal carattere imperioso.

La Santa Sede giudica tuttavia limitativa la definizione di "inno nazionale" per la composizione, che intenderebbe invece parlare «al cuore di quanti in tutto il mondo vedono in Roma la sede di Pietro», configurandosi pertanto come canto transnazionale ad uso di tutti coloro che professano la religione cattolica, riconoscendo il primato di autorità al vescovo di Roma.
