Description
Gwendolyn Brooks is a great poet and I love this one in particular because it speaks to the tomboy in me who likes to break rules. I love it. If your class is starting a poetry unit, or African-American history, or just American history, or urban life, Gwendolyn brooks, and this poem is a great place to start. The idea of this poem is that she's writing about a life she doesn't have, she's writing about a person that she's not but wants to be. It isn't that what literature does? It helps us reach for some we don't have. Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize it is wonderful to see why. You will love this poem!
