This song is about Jesus Christ's birth, life and death being seen as a rose among thorns. The rose when created by God probably did not have thorns until the fall of man when God cursed the ground in Genesis 3. Since everyone has sinned, it was our sins (thorns) that nailed Jesus (the Rose) to the cross. In Song of Solomon Jesus is the Rose of Sharon. The Good Samaritan is also a picture type of Jesus Christ.
Why is it the year 2016 right now? Because Jesus was born 2016 years ago. We celebrate his birth on Christmas day, and we have the New Year right after his birth.
