March 20, 2020 marks the 84th birthday of dub and reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry who shows no signs of slowing down his creative output and performance. Scratch recently completed a 45th anniversary tour in North America (nearly 30 shows) for his 1973 Blackboard Jungle Dub album, performing the world’s first dub album live for the first time thanks to the technology of his band NYC based band Subatomic Sound System. Performing nearly every show to capacity crowds, here is a recap from the sold out Brooklyn show at Elsewhere.
Performed live here, Scratch's original album features several songs like Kaya and Keep On Moving, early songs he penned with Bob Marley and he performs those live as a duet with his original acapella recordings of Bob from the early 70s.
The band features percussion legend Larry McDonald who worked with Scratch, Bob, Peter Tosh and many more back in Jamaica at the start of their careers and the inception of reggae itself. Subatomic founder Emch is on the dubs, riddim mix & arrangement, and melodica, Troy Simms on sax, plus an introduction by Jahdan Blakkamoore (& Treasure Don) who performed a with Subatomic prior to Scratch appearing on stage.
Scratch announced during the tour that he will be releasing an updated version of Blackboard Jungle Dub based on the tour with Subatomic, similar to the Super Ape Returns To Conquer album released in 2017 with Subatomic Sound System.
