Description
[Cheonji Ilbo, Gwangyang = Reporter Lee Bong-hwa] Baaldo, the only island in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do, is being reborn as a “Yun Dong-ju Theme Tourism Hub.”
The city is transforming it into a stay-type tourist destination by creating “Dong-ju’s Starlight Garden,” installing media art, and improving landscaping.
The island’s name originates from “Cheonjabongjo-hyeol,” a propitious site on Mangdeok Mountain where one could pay respects to the emperor. Accessibility has been improved with the opening of Haemaji Bridge and Byeolhaeneun Bridge.
At Mangdeok Port, the “Jeong Byeong-wook House,” which preserved Yun Dong-ju’s handwritten manuscript collection The Sky, the Wind, the Stars, and the Poem, is maintained.
This poetry collection was personally bound by Yun in 1941 and entrusted to his junior Jeong Byeong-wook. It was hidden in a jar and preserved until its publication in 1948.
Spaces such as the Yun Dong-ju Poetry Garden, Byeolhaeneun Bridge, and Dong-ju Café have been established, turning the area into a literary tourism destination.
Marking the 80th anniversary of Liberation, Gwangyang City plans to develop Baaldo into a historical and cultural island remembered across generations.
