Description

This particular Kunqu section is extracted from the Chinese famous drama “Peony Pavilion 牡丹亭”, also named “The Return of Soul”, which is a romantic tragicomedy play written by dramatist Tang Xianzu in 1598, in Ming Dynasty. Tang Xianzu (汤显祖) is considered as “The Shakespeare of the East”.

This Kunqu performance tells a story about a young pretty lady from a wealthy family, was led by her servant girl to visit the beautiful garden on her family’s estate. It was in spring season, all the flowers were in full bloom. The lady was enchanted by the beautiful scenery, but she also felt sad at the same time, because nobody noticed those flower blossoms, as well as her pretty appearance.
