Mozi: Loving and Benefitting Each Other
The piece was originally inspired by Mozi’s “Be Against Assault” Theory. Regardless of time, mutual love and benefit between people are the cornerstones of social stability. Conversely, mutual resentment and harm will create conflicts and disasters. The drum is a type of “aggressive instrument”. The sounds produced create a sense of vigilance, energy and excitement. Besides being a percussion instrument, the drum is also a “communication tool” that used to “convey messages” by some tribes in Africa, and ancient Chinese troops to “give orders”. Rituals, dances, attack of enemies and culling of beasts are some other possible uses of drums.
In it, “drums” are used to reflect Mozi’s spirit of mutual love, with “Be Against Assault” as the basic concept, before seeking to establish a harmonious relationship with the orchestra. This occurs when the drums are played at the softest level possible.
While performing the piece, the conductor will be using “drums” to lead the audience to use their applause and vocals, alongside the orchestra, to bring them together as a world of music that sings praises of peace, and offer blessings and great expectations for 2018.
