This is a traditional Bashkir song about the Napoleonic Wars. Yes, the Bashkirs made up only 2-3% of the entire Russian army (though even that is a significant number), but they left a strong impression on the French and other Europeans because they fought as traditional horse archers. For this, they were called the "Northern Cupids" (Les Amours du Nord) in reference to Cupid, the god of love, due to their bows.
